Synaptics Inc. rolled out an extension of its Astra AI-native platform just ahead of the Embedded World Exhibition in Nuremberg last week, adding the SR-series of adaptive MCUs with features that include context-aware Edge AI for improved low-power performance.

In addition to being more power efficient, the SR-series are optimized for various market segments, including consumer, enterprise and industrial IoT, the company said. The advantages include accelerators, adaptive vision, audio and voice algorithms, Synaptics said, in a statement. They can be designed into a range of products, including battery-operated security cameras, appliances, point-of-sale terminals, digital signage and scanners, the company added.

“We are at an inflection point in Edge AI where embedded developers have a unique opportunity to redefine human-machine interaction through multimodal processing and contextual awareness,” said Vikram Gupta, general manager of IoT processors and chief product officer at Synaptics, in a statement. “Unlocking this potential requires a new class of embedded compute silicon. As part of our Astra family, the SR-Series extends our Edge AI processing roadmap with intelligence optimized for various power levels. It allows the development of cognitive IoT devices that seamlessly adapt to their surroundings, from ultra-low-power always-on sensing to high-performance edge inference.”

The Ojo-Yoshida Report visited Synaptics’ booth at the Embedded World Show for a demonstration of the new MCU series by Martyn Humphries, vice president of market development, who described the features of the Astra SR-series. Humphries explained that the Astra SR-series are based on open-source architecture and Arm Cortex-M55 cores.

The SR-series support a wide range of peripherals and accelerators, including “dual MIPI camera interfaces, image processing with encode and pre-roll, motion and voice activity detection engines, and industry standard security,” the company said. “These features make it well-suited for streaming vision and audio processing applications at the IoT device edge.”

The following is a clip of Humphries describing the features and applications of the Astra SR-series with Ojo-Yoshida Report editors as part of our reports on Hot Stuff from the Embedded World Exhibition.
