Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) will practically be mandated for any new car model launched on the European market by 2023. Euro NCAP recently released a 40-page protocol document detailing what it takes for carmakers to get a 5-star DMS rating. We asked Colin Barnden to break it down.
Given the strong Europeans push for DMS, we might be seeing divergent paths in Europe and North America, as carmakers pursue safety in next-generation cars.
Barnden sums it up: “Using technology to make human drivers into safer drivers …That’s what Euro NCAP has been pushing for the last 10 years. There’s a separate, completely unrelated narrative [emerging in the United States], which is using technology to replace humans as drivers. This narrative is pushed by Waymo, Cruise and others doing robotaxis and robotrucks: ‘Let’s take the human out of the loop.’”
