Embedded applications are getting infused with artificial intelligence (AI), a development that was clearly demonstrated at this week’s Embedded World 2025 event in Nuremberg, Germany. At booth after booth, AI was the defining element most companies were touting about their products.

STMicroelectronics NV is in the vanguard of this accelerated effort to enable microcontrollers with AI and IoT capabilities. As part of the Ojo-Yoshida Report’s “Hot Stuff” video series highlighting outstanding products from the 2025 Embedded World Show, we asked ST about its latest MCU, which although announced in a press release one week earlier, was rolled out and prominently displayed and discussed at the event.

In addition to the connectivity capability, the STM32U3 family of microcontrollers is aimed at applications that require low power consumption in remote locations where they must operate for an extended period, according to the company. Use cases include “utility meters, healthcare devices such as glucose meters and insulin pumps, animal care monitors, forest-fire sensors, and industrial sensors including thermostats and smoke detectors,” ST said, in a statement.

“The STM32U3 series builds on the heritage of ST-established ultra-low-power general-purpose microcontroller class as it is known today, which opened the door to widespread diffusion of smart technology in diverse environments,” said Patrick Aidoune, General-Purpose MCU Division General Manager at STMicroelectronics, in a statement. “The new devices cut dynamic power consumption to the bone, boosting efficiency by a factor of two compared to our previous generation, hence contributing to companies’ sustainability goals.”

We caught up with Remi El-Ouazzane, ST’s group president for microcontrollers and digital ICs, at the company’s Embedded World 2025 booth to ask him what hot product the company was demonstrating at the exhibition and he immediately went for the STM32U3, touting its low-power innovation, but also stressing other key factors. The STM32U3 offers critical safety, security, durability, and AI capabilities that are essential requirements from customers nowadays, El-Ouazzane said.

Plus, it’s a general purpose MCU, which means it can be used for a wide range of applications, helping to reduce design time and, thus, time-to-market, he said. The discussion with El-Ouazzane on the STM32U3 as part of the Hot Stuff product series was brief, but the ST executive’s enthusiasm for the product was evident. El-Ouazzane will also feature in our annual Embedded Quest video podcast debuting next week.

Here’s his short take on ST’s Hot Stuff from the 2025 Embedded World Exhibition:
